'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 update: Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo not coming back?

(YouTube/KBS World TV)"Descendants of the Sun" reportedly not to feature lead stars Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo?

The South Korean drama craze is far from over. The second season of "Descendants of the Sun" has been surrounded by rumors ranging from its cast to its plot. And more recently, a new story has broken and it states that season 2 will not feature the original series' two leads.

There have been talks about season 2 possibly focusing on the love between Seo Dae Young and Yoon Myung Joo. The pairing of the couple in season 1 received good feedback from fans, but it is unknown if their star power will match the love team of Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo.

When "Descendants of the Sun" first aired, the drama gained a massive fan following, with numerous loyal fans even hoping that the two leads would get together in real life. Rumors even started circulating that the pair had begun a romance offscreen as well, but none of them were confirmed to have been true. Song Joong Ki's statement of wanting to continue working with Song Hye Kyo only served to fuel the already blazing fire. However, the two are reportedly busy with their work schedules, which is why they reportedly won't be appearing in the second season of the acclaimed drama.

It seems that Song Joong Ki isn't the only one who wants to work with Song Hye Kyo, though. Actor Lee Min Ho has previously expressed his interest in sharing the screen with the actress, causing fans to push for a Lee Min Ho and Song Hye Kyo romantic drama.

Fans will certainly be disappointed if the two leads don't come back for a second season. However, since it has not been confirmed yet, there may still be light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, KBS Channel boss Jung Song Ho has referred to "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 as an expression of gratitude to fans who made the drama a worldwide hit.

"Descendants of the Sun" season 2 is expected to premiere in 2017.
