Fans of the super successful Korean drama series "Descendants of the Sun" have been waiting impatiently for updates regarding its upcoming sequel. Although it has been teased that the second season will air in 2017, nothing has been confirmed yet by KBS.

In April, network department head Jung Sung Ho announced their plans to have a sequel. As per Soompi, he said it was their way of thanking the fans for the positive turnout of the drama. "Descendants of the Sun" enjoyed one of the highest ratings when it aired in the first quarter of the year. Its popularity quickly spread to other countries, not only in Asia but also in different parts of the globe. This time, Jung said they were planning a 2017 release. He also shared that they have yet to discuss the storyline for the sequel.

"We have to keep discussing whether it will be a story of a soldier or not. 'Descendants of the Sun' was this year's top drama and greatly contributed to the Hallyu wave, and we mean that we wish to work on a project that will follow it closely. For the time being, we plan to proceed with a variety of projects with a 2017 broadcast goal," he said.

If the chosen plotline for the sequel will not dwell on military romance, then viewers will probably not see the continuation of Captain Yoo Shi Jin (played by actor Song Joong-ki) and Doctor Kang Mo-Yeon's (played by actress Song Hye-kyo) love story. According to Movie News Guide, it is possible that a new cast will be formed for season 2. The two main actors may not reprise their roles because of their busy schedules. If Big Boss and Beauty will not be around for the sequel, fans hope that the second lead couple, Sergeant Seo Dae-young (played by actor Jin Goo) and Lieutenant Yoon Myung-joo (played by actress Kim Ji Won), will at least return.
