Marvel Studios announced the release date and key star for its upcoming movie "Doctor Strange" which will be the first of the many movies in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The studio's third phase ushers in a new set of superheroes including Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, the Inhumans, Aquaman and many more.

Marvel News announced that Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch, of "Sherlock" fame, will play the role of Doctor Strange. The movie is the first in the MCU that will foray into the fields of mysticism, astral planes, alternate dimensions and the supernatural. "Doctor Strange" will focus on the fascinating origin story behind the Sorcerer Supreme who starts out as a neurosurgeon.

A horrific car accident leaves Doctor Stephen Strange with damaged hands. He travels the world to search for a way to restore his limbs to its former glory but instead finds himself learning the mystic arts and endowed with magic. Doctor Strange starts to traverse through different astral planes, visits alternate dimensions and is infused with renewed mystical superpowers.

According to Marvel News, producer Kevin Feige expressed that Cumberbatch would be ideal for the role. He said, "Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character." The film is set to hit the theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.

Helmed by Scott Derrickson, "Doctor Strange" will introduce the supernatural world into an otherwise science-driven studio. However, Screen Rant reports that Marvel will still rely on quantum mechanics and physics to explain the good Doctor's myriad powers. Remember that even in the "Thor" franchise, Marvel heavily relied on astrophysics to explain the superhero's origin story. Feige told the website, "It is mind-bending and it's all based in physics and based in quantum mechanics. We're going to play a lot with the notion of that as an explanation for how the sorcerers do what they do."

The upcoming months will reveal more about the cast, plot and other news as filming begins in May 2015.
