It is the end of an era as "Downton Abbey" premieres its final season on Jan. 3, 2016, on PBS in the US. The internationally-renowned British period drama that explored life in the Edwardian era of the 1920s won accolades and popularity. At the Television Critics Association, the "Downton Abbey" panel not only announced a release date for series six but also teased spoilers and the possibility of a movie in the near future.

The Dowager Countess will be back and up to her old tricks, reports TVGuide. Fans should look forward to the Dowager and Isobel Crawley at odds with an issue regarding the hospital and patients' health.

Moreover, Lord and Lady Grantham will also face challenges as the latter wishes to gain some independence and have a life outside Downton Abbey. This will certainly be hard for Robert to stomach.

As expected, Lady Mary will have many suitors, including Henry Talbot, leading to ample drama. In the season's premiere, the widow will be on a hunt and maybe she does so to impress automobile enthusiast, Talbot. However, Mary is going to continue to have differences with her sister, Edith.

Lady Edith, on the other hand, will have new problems. As if raising Marigold is not enough, she will have to contend with employees who are not happy taking orders from a woman in the 1920s.

Lord Merton is still in the picture even though Isobel Crawley turned down his marriage proposal. Is a reunion in the works? But not everyone gets a happy ending as Executive Producer, Gareth Neame, hinted the possibility of some character(s) death.

While this is the last season, fans may be excited to know that there may be a "Downton Abbey" movie in the future. Neame said, "There is this speculation about whether we'll make a Downton movie. We might. It's something we've talked about. I think a Downton movie would be a wonderful thing, but we don't have a script or a plan as of yet," reports TVLine.

The cast will complete production on Aug. 15, 2015.
