Morland (John Noble) will surprise Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) by showing a tougher, meaner side of him in the upcoming season of the CBS series "Elementary."

Last installment, the older Holmes decided to sacrifice himself to take down Moriarty's (Natalie Dormer) organization. The plan was for him to become its leader and infiltrate from within. To say that Sherlock was shocked with his father's decision is an understatement. He never thought Morland was capable of thinking outside himself. Morland basically signed a deal with the devil.

Executive producer Rob Doherty recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Morland's plight in the new season.

"It's very dangerous and it has to be done patiently and with great subtlety. All of that considered, I couldn't imagine a better man for the job. I don't think it's the kind of thing Morland will attempt to wrap up by a certain deadline. He knows he has to immerse himself, get to know the players and very carefully, very deliberately start to pick them apart," Doherty says.

With the old man putting his life at risk, viewers can expect that Sherlock will have some serious introspection to do. This is not the old, selfish Morland that he has known all his life. It may even push him to consider whether it is time to bury the hatchet and forgive his father's past mistakes. Sherlock has been trying to avoid Morland since the latter arrived in the city. He especially did not want to listen to his apology about what happened years ago. Will this be the start of a reconciliation?

Meanwhile, fans are wondering if Moriarty will make a comeback in season 5. Dormer's character in HBO's "Game of Thrones," Margaery Tyrell, is already dead. CarterMatt posits that the actress will find the time to reprise her role in the CBS series amidst her busy schedule. If Moriarty does return, it will be interesting to see how Sherlock will treat her.

"Elementary" season 5 will premiere on Sunday, October 2 at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.
