Square Enix will be releasing an updated version of "Final Fantasy VII" almost 10 years after its initial release. "Final Fantasy VII Remake" will follow the original storyline of the 1997 game but will feature high-definition visuals and more real-time game elements.

"Final Fantasy VII Remake" was first confirmed during Sony's E3 2015 press conference and the first game footage was released last December. Game producer Yoshinori Kitase also previewed a few game elements that players can expect when the game is released.

"With the 'Final Fantasy VII Remake," we have the opportunity to go beyond the story, world and experience of 'Final Fantasy VII' in ways we've always dreamed of – from the depths of Midgar to the skies above the Planet. The multi-part format enables us to expand the original story and turn it into an epic experience for fans and new gamers alike," Kitase explained in a blog post.

Fans of "Final Fantasy VII" have been asking for a remake for years now. However, according to Kitase, the decision to do a remake only now was due to the massive undertaking it will require to rebuild the game from scratch and using today's current technologies. Thus, in order to create a worthy successor that is able to cover the scale and scope of the original game, "Final Fantasy VII Remake" will be split into several episodes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the highly-anticipated remake will be released anytime soon.

Kitase recently told Japanese magazine "Famitsu" (as translated by Siliconera), "I believe that this year will still be a year of preparations for 'Final Fantasy VII Remake.' I'd like to create a new kind of value for the hardware that is the PlayStation 4 for our next announcement."

Rumors suggest that "Final Fantasy VII Remake" will be released sometime in 2017. There are also rumors that the game might be released for the upcoming Nintendo NX game console. However, at this time, Square Enix has not made any announcements.

"Final Fantasy VII Remake" will be released for the PlayStation 4. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
