In less than a week from the game's launch, "Final Fantasy XV" developer Square Enix has announced that it has already shipped five million copies of the game.

As interpreted by Siliconera, Square Enix said that the figure covers both the worldwide shipment of discs and digital copy sales. The developer's statement also noted that "Final Fantasy XV" is the first installment in the franchise to get a simultaneous worldwide release.

However, some may recall that there were previous reports of unauthorized sales in various parts of the world even before the game's official release last Nov. 29. These reports were confirmed and addressed by game director Hajime Tabata through an official statement, which said: "Unfortunately, there has been an unauthorised distribution of the boxed edition of FINAL FANTASY XV in select regions and we have noticed that gameplay footage from people playing these copies has appeared online."

The five-million shipment figure is actually halfway through the "personal goal" of Square Enix, which means the game is indeed off to a good start.

Gaming fans initially thought that Square Enix needed to sell 10 million copies of the game to make a profit, following one of Tabata's previous statements. However, the game director clarified afterwards that 10 million is not the number the game needs in order to bring Square Enix a profit.

10 million was merely the studio's "personal goal," according to a GameSpot report. It also quoted Tabata clarifying his previous statement and saying, "We've thought about what we need to do to achieve this number and tasked ourselves with this huge objective."

The game is expected to continue performing better in terms of sales, especially with the fact that Square Enix has already prepared an online multiplayer mode and several batches of downloadable content. In the upcoming DLC packs, Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto will each get their own game where they will be playable characters – another first for the franchise.

"Final Fantasy XV" is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But according to previous reports, Tabata and Square Enix are not closing their doors on a potential PC release of the game.
