George R.R. Martin to guest star in Z Nation as zombie version of himself

George R.R. Martin just celebrated his birthday with a big bang, starting with a short impromptu roast by host Andy Samberg during the 67th Emmy Awards and ending with "Game of Thrones" picking up 12 awards.

The fantasy writer was at the Emmy Awards presumably to lend some moral support to the show that his "A Song of Fire and Ice" novels have inspired. The host was quick to point out that Sept. 20 was also Martin's birthday and that like the Emmy's, the novelist also turned 67 that day.

"In fact, we have a photo of George at the very first Emmys," joked the comedian before a photo of a baby was shown. The chubby tot was wearing a snazzy tuxedo and Martin's trademark cap. And to complete the look, the baby was also sporting "the American Tolkien's" full facial hair.

The 67-year-old Martin took the ribbing in stride and was soon rewarded with "Game of Throne's" picking up awards one after the other. The HBO hit already won eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmy's last week and continued its winning streak at Sunday's Emmy's where it won the award for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for "Mother's Mercy" and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage, among others.

Of course, Samberg could not let the night go by without referencing what is arguably this year's most compelling debate – the rumored death of Jon Snow. When greeting GRRM a happy birthday, the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star also thanked the writer for telling him "during the commercial that Jon Snow is still alive."

Whether the character is really dead or still alive is still a hot topic and one of the main reasons why fans are eagerly awaiting Martin's next book, "Winds of Winter," to come out.

The author recently teased his fans with a photo of himself as a zombie, apparently doing a book signing and chowing down on a book titled "A Promise of Spring." The title is obviously a reference to "A Dream of Spring," the alleged seventh book in the "A Song of Fire and Ice" series.

Martin is appearing as a zombie version of himself in one episode of the Syfy show "Z Nation" and said that he wanted to prove to his fans "that even in the Zombie Apocalypse, the 'Song of Ice and Fire' books will still come out!"

There's still no official launch date set yet for "Winds of Winter," but it will reportedly hit bookshelves in early 2016.
