It is not far-off to say that 2016 is shaping up to be a year of movie reboots and sequels. With next year's film schedules already up online, moviegoers can expect new installments of previous blockbuster hits including "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Independence Day" and "Finding Dory" to name a few.

Arguably, the revamp of the iconic 1984 film "Ghostbusters" is one of the most highly anticipated titles out of all the theatrical releases pegged for next year.

"Ghostbusters," whose first movie premiered more than three decades ago, is a comedy science fiction movie written by comedic legends, Harold Ramis and Dan Akyroyd. It follows a group of parapsychologists in New York as they seek legitimacy in investigating and capturing ghosts and other supernatural beings.

Despite the premise being a tad ridiculous, the film received worldwide success from both fans and critics alike. Not only has "Ghostbusters" been universally lauded as one of the funniest movies of the last 25 years but its box-office earnings has also put it in the top 40 highest grossing movies of all time.

Because of its success, it comes as no surprise that another "Ghostbusters" film is currently in production. What is surprising is that unlike the first two films, "Ghostbusters" would see an all-female main cast including Kristen Wigg, Melissa McCartney, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. This decision, while exciting, did not sit well with some of the fans of the franchise.

In an interview with Empire online, however, Paul Feig, the film's director, explained that while he is reverential towards "Ghostbusters" one and two, he is not in the business of making a copycat or a parody of the previous movies.

"We're not recreating the old movie but we want to do just enough fun nods that the fans will go, 'Oh, okay, they're acknowledging that the other movie existed, I like to watch parodies, but I don't want to do them because they're too referential."

The new "Ghostbusters" is scheduled to be released on July 22 next year.
