'Gotham' season 3 spoilers: arrival of the Mad Hatter; is Bruce Wayne's doppelganger a pawn of the Court of Owls?

(Facebook/GOTHAMonFOX)Bruce Wayne's doppelganger is expected to be his nemesis next season.

It's been said that "Gotham" will never be same again. And it's easy to see why now that a whole busload of Prof. Hugo Strange's experiments were inadvertently set free.

The second half of "Gotham's" second season focused on the villains that Batman fans know and love. Aside from introducing Mr. Freeze and Prof. Hugo Strange, the show also teased the existence of the Court of Owls, the mysterious society that had controlled the city for centuries.

While the season had lots of surprising twists, it didn't hold a candle to what the show's season 2 finale had in store for fans. With Arkham's more dangerous patients being loaded in buses and transferred to another location as per the enigmatic White-Haired Lady's orders, Prof. Strange set out to destroy the city wiith a bomb. Gordon and Lucious were able to neutralize the bomb and had Strange arrested, but the passengers of Arkham's abandoned bus were set free. As the prisoners lumbered away, a long-haired boy with a striking resemblance to Bruce Wayne is shown thanking an old woman for setting them free.

The appearance of Bruce's doppelganger was a great way to wrap up the season, as it paved the way for a radically different Gotham in season 3. Showrunner John Stephens also teased to TV Line that this other-Bruce will usher in "a development that is in line with all the other story we've been telling [in season 2], but one piece that we've kept hidden."

The revelation of a Bruce Wayne look-alike has had "Gotham" fans discussing on who this doppelganger is. Some have theorized that it could be Thomas Elliot, known to comic book fans as a childhood friend of Bruce who would eventually be called Hush. Others have posited that he might also be an evil version of the young Bruce. Still, others are saying he might be a pawn of the Court of Owls. But whoever he is, Bruce's doppelganger is expected to be the teenager's nemesis in season 3.

Stephens also teased that "the nature of the city of Gotham will change," especially with the expected arrival of three new villains (to add to the others already roaming about) — the Mad Hatter, an ambitious female journalist, and a young woman "who uses her sexuality to entrap men."

"Gotham" season 3 is expected to return to Fox in the fall.
