While fans were left to mourn the passing of their beloved McDreamy in the last season of "Grey's Anatomy," showrunner, Shonda Rhimes, promises a lighter 12th season, as the show moves about a year forward from the death of Dr. Shepherd.

Rhimes recently sat down with TVLine to talk about the death of one of the most loved characters on the show. In the interview, the showrunner said that writing McDreamy off brought her to tears. Rhimes also revealed that she wasn't on set when the scene was being filmed.

During the interview, Rhimes also answered why she decided on skipping a year. She said, "I couldn't imagine a world in which Meredith could go a month and be able to speak or breathe — or [even] six months, I needed time to pass for her to even be in a place where I felt like she could have a conversation."

The time hop has also made room for the show to have some sort of a "reboot." Jason George who plays Dr. Ben Warren also teased about the upcoming season, saying that the 12th season will show fans why they fell in love with show. Rhimes has also confirmed the changes in the show. She told The Hollywood Reporter, "We had a table read last week in which I have never heard the entire room laugh that much — I want to say since season one — the entire room was laughing and everybody broke into applause when we were done reading."

According to IB times, fans will see Meredith returning to her mother's home together with the kids. However, the death of Derek is still making it difficult for her to adjust to her new life. There is still no plans for Meredith beginning a new relationship in the upcoming season.

"Grey's Anatomy" is set to premiere their next season on Sept. 24.
