'Grey's Anatomy' season 11 episode 21 spoilers: Derek is saves car crash victims in 'How To Save A Life'

(ABC)

Where is Derek Shepherd? This has been a burning question amongst fans of the medical drama "Grey's Anatomy". Episode 20 saw Meredith deal with her PTSD alone as a plane crashed in Seattle. She remembered her own time in a crash where she watched her sister die and her husband damage his arm. Meredith keeps calling her husband but he doesn't pick up, leading her to believe he was a victim of the crash. Towards the end, we see Meredith pick up a call when a police car stops in front of her house. Is McDreamy dead?

Fortunately, he is alive and safe. Episode 21's description teases that not only is he alive and well, but the neurosurgeon is actually playing hero. TVGuide reports that the real reason Derek isn't reachable was because he was saving lives. Meredith's husband is on his way to his meeting in Washington, D.C when he witnesses a horrific car accident. Rather than being the victim, he is their only savior.

Derek springs into action to help the wounded. As per the promotional clip, the victims seem to be all minors. Meredith's husband is seen using his surgical skills to save the wounded victims, but can he really save them all? Derek is seen assuring one bloodied victim that, "I don't let people die". However, towards the end, viewers can see one of the cars burst into flames. Will Derek actually save people or will this be another heartache?

The interesting fact about episode 21 is that it is written by showrunner Shonda Rhimes, according to CaterMatt. Rhimes has usually reserved her writing skills for "Scandal", having only written the infamous season eight finale of "Grey's Anatomy" that featured Lexie Grey's death.

"How To Save A Life" will certainly be interesting as fans see more of Derek. Tune in to ABC on Thursday, April 23 at 8 p.m. ET to watch the episode.
