There is no doubt that "Grey's Anatomy," with eleven seasons under its belt, is one of the longest running TV shows on air today. While the decade-long run of the series is very impressive, it has to be said that the show is barely recognizable from when it first started.

Most of the main cast on the medical television series have already left and have been replaced and it seems like one more character will not be returning to Seattle Grace next season.

"Grey's Anatomy," which first aired in 2005, initially followed the life of Meredith Grey along with the other surgical interns and resident doctors in the fictional Hospital of Seattle Grace, as they balance their career and their personal lives.

Season 11 saw the shocking death of the beloved Derrick Shepard played by Patrick Dempsey. With one more original cast gone, it was very surprising that the show has been renewed for a twelfth season.

IBTimes, however, reports that it would be long before the medical drama would cease airing. In an article that was published by the new outlet, ABC entertainment President Paul Lee stated that the show has been a powerful brand in the company and hopes that "Grey's Anatomy" would air for more seasons.

So what does the 12th season of "Grey's Anatomy" have in store?

Now that only three original cast members remain, it is obvious that there is a question of how the series would continue. Thankfully, Shonda Rimes, in an official statement, as reported by breathecast.com, has shed light on what is to be expected from the upcoming season.

"Meredith and the entire 'Grey's Anatomy' family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say 'the carousel never stops turning." said Rimes.

The new season of 'Grey's Anatomy' will start on September 24.
