'Grimm' season 6 release date, spoilers: Sean Renard set to be next season's big bad; season cut to 13 episodes

So many things happened during the season 5 finale of "Grimm" that fans still have difficulty wrapping their heads around it. But when the dust settled, two things are clear — the show will be returning for another season and Sean Renard will be the next big, bad villain.

The previous season saw the rise of Black Claw and Captain Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) aligning himself with the shadowy group, essentially turning his back on his former ally, Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli). But when Nick was seemingly about to be killed by Bonaparte (Shaun Toub), Portland's new mayor ran a sword through the Black Claw leader. The season ended with the Grimm and the zauerbiest facing each other in shock.

NBC has already renewed the series for a sixth season, with the show reportedly picking up at the exact moment that the finale left off. Giuntoli previously admitted that he can see several possible scenarios for how the scene will play out.

"Will there be a negotiation? Will Nick think this through? Or is he so furious at Renard for taking his child away that he'll just go crazy?," Giuntoli wondered to TV Insider. "I would imagine the first scene in season 6 will be a real melee with Nick and Renard."

The "Buddymoon" star also revealed that Renard "is going to be the big bad in season 6." It's a twist that Roiz is apparently totally on board with. The 42-year-old actor told the audience who attended his JIBLand panel that Roiz has been pushing for his character to return to being bad, or at least ambiguous, in his actions and intentions.

Aside from dealing with his former police captain, the Grimm also has to contend with the return of Eve's (Bitsie Tulloch) feelings, how he will be reunited with Adalind (Claire Coffee) and their son, Kelly, and even Sergeant Wu's (Reggie Lee) transformation.

The question now is whether season 6 will have enough episodes to cover everything as NBC has only ordered 13 episodes. Luckily, the network has the option to order more episodes, depending on the ratings and how NBC's new shows will fare.

"Grimm" season 6 is set to return to NBC sometime in October.
