First is Marc Laidlaw leaving Valve Corporation, the developer of the game, and states that it is likely that after he left, no one has been able to take over and do his job well.

The fact that Marc Laidlaw's departure will adversely impact the game was also discussed in January of this year when his exit was announced. At that time, however, Valve did not provide any details about the status of the game or whether or not Laidlaw had finished writing it. Importantly, Laidlaw was the only writer who was involved in the first two games in the series. He also had a major role to play in Episode 1 and 2 of "Half-Life 2" but was assisted by a team of writers. It is also likely that his vision for the game was one reason why it became very popular and no other writer has managed to take over and complete his job.
