'Hannibal' series finale 'The Wrath of the Lamb' brings the Red Dragon plot to an end; show's cancellation is final

The end is nigh for fannibals as there are only a few days left before the series finale.

Despite the ruckus created by fans, the petition that was launched and the prayers that were offered, no network or streaming service was brave enough to pick up another season of "Hannibal."

It's a gut wrenching shame but it seems that season four's finale, which will be aired on Aug. 29, is the last time that a series that's as decadent and gory as "Hannibal" will grace TV screens for a long, long time. But fans are content with the knowledge that whatever happens, the show did its best to remain true to the vision and essence of Thomas Harris' novels, albeit with some interesting and well-played changes.

The series finale, titled "The Wrath of the Lamb," wraps up Will's journey and the Red Dragon's storyline. But who will prevail and how he or she will end up physically and mentally is the question.

A synopsis for the finale states that Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) will make one last, desperate attempt to stop (maybe kill?) the serial killer who calls himself the Red Dragon/ Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage). He will reportedly use or be inspired by Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) as he devises a way to eradicate the threat the Red Dragon poses over himself and his family.

Hannibal's (and now Will's ) psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) advises Will that playing Hannibal's game might end with him losing everyone close to him – his family, Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) and even Jack (Laurence Fishburne).

But as the title implies, Hannibal's so-called lamb is determined to see his plan through.

Regardless of how it will end, the series will go down as one of the most artistically conceived and critically-received shows ever to grace network television. "Hannibal" might not have received the same commercial success as, say "The Walking Dead," but it has paved the way for more shows of its caliber to be made.

The series finale of "Hannibal" is set to air on Aug. 29 on NBC.
