'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child:' J.K. Rowling London's West End theaters will get play in 2016
Harry Potter is coming back…sort of.
J.K Rowling recently announced via Twitter that a play about the boy wizard will open next year at London's West End. However, the play is not so much about Harry as it is about his parents, James and Lily Potter.
Written by Jack Thorne of "This is England" fame, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will give viewers a glimpse into the untold story of his parents before they met their demise at the hands of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. It might even touch on the largely unknown friendship between Lily Potter and Severus Snape as well as her relationship with her sister Petunia.
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will be directed by John Tiffany and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions together with Colin Callender's Playground Entertainment and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions. J.K Rowling did not write the script but she developed it with the help of Thorne and Tiffany. But she did confirm that the story should be considered canon, meaning it is an official and accepted part of Harry Potter's universe.
The very welcome news was met with much celebration and excitement by Potter fans who are still very active and present despite the story ending years ago. But it also caused some confusion as some news networks, in their eagerness to report the story, inadvertently forgot to mention that this is not a prequel.
The author has since been battling to correct that misconception through numerous tweets. However, it does not seem to be working as networks, and some fans, are still thinking the play is a prequel to Rowling's first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."
Regardless of when Rowling will be able to disabuse people of the notion that the play is not a sequel, Harry Potter fans have another spin-off to look forward to as the author is already hard at work writing the script for "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." The spin-off revolves around the book's author Newt Scamander and his time among New York's wizarding community. Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) is set to star.
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will begin its West End journey in the summer of 2016.
