While HoloLens remains exclusive to developers almost a year after its first release, Microsoft is reportedly planning to release a new version of the mixed reality smartglasses in the future.

During the BETT show in London back in January, Microsoft HoloLens commercial head Roger Walkden talked to The Inquirer to discuss the company's plans for a head-mounted device.

Walkden admitted that the sales of the device remains in the thousand, but claimed that they are very happy with the current reception of the developers in their product.

However, Walkden also revealed that they have more plans for the device in the future. "There's a roadmap. I can't tell you anything about it, though. [Microsoft] keep that kind of information way clear of me so that I don't accidentally tell you anything," the HoloLens head stated. "But the roadmap does exist, and we now that at this point this is the only device we've got, and the only one we need in order to get people started on their journey," he also said.

He also reminded the public that the HoloLens Developer Edition is just the first version of the device, and there will be more versions up ahead. Yet, he could not enumerate the company's road map for the device at this point.

But while Microsoft's plans for HoloLens 2 remain under wraps, a report from The Leaker claims that the tech giant is currently developing the next-generation augmented reality (AR) device that will be capable of coming with truthful virtual objects complete with their shadows.

The report also claims that Microsoft is keeping the new HoloLens design a secret, but it will have a resemblance to the Google Glass. It will also reportedly become lighter and more compact compared to the first one.

The device will also be more normal-looking compared to the HoloLens Developers Edition that first came out on March 30, 2016.

On the other hand, other sources also speculate that HoloLens 2 could be released by 2018.
