'Homeland' season 6 premiere date, spoilers: Carrie preps for new missions

(Facebook/HomelandonShowtime)Carrie returns to the US in "Homeland" season 6.

After taking a break from her job as a CIA agent, Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) will return invigorated and ready for her new missions with the agency in the sixth season of the hit Showtime series "Homeland."

Last installment, Carrie worked as a security specialist in a private institution in Berlin. Her old colleagues back in the US, particularly her boss, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), were not happy with her decision. He thought she was committing treason by spilling classified information about the country to foreigners. The upcoming season will see Carrie's return to the US and perhaps, a reunion with old friends in the CIA.

In his interview with the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Alex Gansa said that giving Danes' character the break that she deserved was not a unanimous decision by the staff. Still, they let her live an almost normal life outside the confining walls of the CIA. In season 5, the agent got a new boyfriend, although that did not exactly work out. Her work in the foundation was also the exact opposite of her job in intelligence.

"We've taken her through so much sturm and drang over the last few years that we thought it would be nice to give her a little domestic bliss — which, by the way, was not something everybody wanted to do or everyone wanted to see on our staff. ...it was nice to see her in a completely different environment doing something completely different from that work but using her old skill set to do so," the EP shared.

Meanwhile, Gansa recently told Deadline that season 6 would be about the balance between "civil liberties" and "civil security." Carrie and the CIA will still be busy fighting terrorism in the home front. He also said that they have been preparing relevant and realistic storylines that viewers could look forward too.

"Homeland" season 6 is scheduled to air in September on Showtime.
