"Homeland," the espionage thriller from Showtime returns this October and is set to give viewers another action-packed and exhilarating season.

Season four saw Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes, take over the role of Islamabad station chief. However, by the end of the season, a disastrous turn of events had left Carrie disillusioned and guilt-ridden. She left the CIA and decided to focus on taking care of her daughter.

Showtime recently released a trailer for season five, giving fans of the show brief glimpses of what has happened since then.

When season five returns, two years have passed and Carrie has exiled herself in Berlin. She has become a private citizen and Head of Security for the Düring Foundation. She also has a new boyfriend, played by Alexander Fehling, who happens to be a lawyer for the foundation.

Quinn, Carrie's past on-and-off-again boyfriend, on the other hand, is deep in the trenches of Syria. He remains undercover and is secretly working with Saul. "It's a bond that no one else can know about," Rupert Friend, who plays Quinn, said.

It seems that Carrie and Quinn may not reconcile for the time being. "It's two years later, and they're both moved on to other things. But something's always in the air," showrunner, Meredith Stiehm, said. Carrie had always regretted letting Quinn go, so it will be interesting to see when they cross paths again.

"Homeland" promises to keep bringing viewers fresh and compelling new storylines each season. Showtime President, David Nevins, revealed earlier this month during the Television Critics Association press tour, that season five will be tackling Vladimir Putin, ISIS, Charlie Hedbo and Edward Snowden as storylines.

In order to bring these storylines to life, the cast and crew have filmed the entire season in Germany. "Look what's going on in the Middle East, look at what's going on in Syria and Iraq, look at what's happening in Ukraine. We'll be in Europe telling this story. It's all going to be part of the world [Carrie's] in," Alex Gansa, showrunner, said.

In the beginning of the season, a data breach in Berlin will bring Carrie back into the CIA. However, when she returns, it seem that she will be at odds with Saul, who has since been passed over as Director of the CIA.

Season five also introduces new faces as season regulars. Miranda Otto will be playing CIA's Berlin chief of station, who will be working closely with Saul. Sebastian Koch will play Otto Düring, Carrie's new boss and Sarah Sokolovic has been cast as an American journalist working for the foundation.

Season five of "Homeland" returns on Oct. 4, Sunday, at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
