Making over $1.6 billion in the box office, 2015's "Jurassic World" has positioned itself nicely as the third highest grossing film of all time. With massive success that many other studios only dream about, it is not surprising that Universal Studios has already announced plans for a sequel set for a 2018 release.

While details about the upcoming sequel are scant, there are three popular theories gaining traction right now.

The first possible plot point would follow Dr. Wu's escape from Jurassic Park, along with his technology and a case full of dinosaur embryos.

"I feel like that was something that we did in terms of plot that opens up a potential sequel," director, Colin Trevorrow said. According to Trevorrow, there is potential in exploring the science of it all, going beyond the entertainment value of the dinosaurs.

Trevorrow also discussed a deleted scene that foreshadows the dangers of what they are doing. In the scene, Dr. Wu is warning Mesrani about the implications of their actions. "We won't always be the only ones who can make a dinosaur," Wu says in the deleted scene.

Thus, the sequel may see InGen's technology being stolen and other companies creating dinosaurs.

Another theory could delve more into InGen's plan to weaponize the dinosaurs.

While Vic Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio) had perished in the first film, his vision for the raptors' potential as weapons may push through, having someone else take the lead.

An interesting third theory was also discovered by Slash Film. It was also recently uncovered that during the "Jurassic World" promotions, a website was set up for the fictional Masrani Global group, Jurassic Park's corporate website.

One of the fictional news in the archives mentions that in Nov. 2014, InGen had opened a new "Martel" facility in Siberia. The team sent there will be looking for organic remains of wooly mammoths.

It would be interesting if "Jurassic World" woud be able to incorporate extinct creatures from the Cenozoic Era including wooly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers.

The three popular theories prove to be very interesting, should Trevorrow decide to pursue them. Ultimately, it's still too early to tell what direction the sequel will pursue. With at least two more years until the release of the sequel, fans of the franchise will have to do a lot of waiting until more details are officially revealed.

What we do know is that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are set to return. Steven Spielberg will be the film's executive producer, along with Frank Marshall. Trevorrow is returning as screenwriter, along with Derek Connolly.

"Jurassic World 2" is still looking for a director to take over the franchise. Trevorrow is rumored to be directing the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode IX" movie so he will be unable to continue on with "Jurassic World 2."

"Jurassic World 2" will be released to theaters on June 22, 2018.
