Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole album release date: Joint album on hold as rappers focus on solo projects

The collaboration between rappers Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole has been highly anticipated since it was first announced in 2013. However, three years have already gone by without any real update about the upcoming album.

(REUTERS/MARIO ANZUONI)Kendrick Lamar's collaboration with J. Cole seems to be on hold due to precedence of solo projects.

While the two artists continue to work on their solo projects, the lack of updates seems to indicate that the joint album will not be released for the time being. Thankfully, the project seems to be on hold rather than having been scrapped all together.

"Anything's a possibility. Everything's a possibility, but I'ma say this, too: Kendrick and Cole are in a place in their careers and in their lives where they have to keep going. Of course they're two of the biggest rappers out, but they still have to keep grinding. There's so much work that they have to continue to do," Top Dawg Entertainment president Dave Free told MTV News.

Free also added that given the creative minds of Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole, they will need to allocate a lot of time and energy before they are able to collaborate on songs.

Thus, while the collaboration album between the two rappers may still arrive, it will not be released any time soon due to the busy schedules of the rappers. Rest assured, whatever forms their new releases will be, fans will surely enjoy the new music that they come up with.

Just last March, Lamar released "Untitled Unmastered," a compilation album of unreleased demos that were recorded during "To Pimp a Butterfly." The album was well received and debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart.

Meanwhile, J. Cole is headed to Johannesburg, South Africa this June for a live concert. The hip-hop artist is also rumored to join Drake for a summer tour.
