Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole album release date: Collaborative album still a possibility but may not launch any time soon

(Dreamville / Top Dawg Entertainment)Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole previously collaborated on the release of Black Friday.

Rappers Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole announced plans to release a collaborative album back in 2013. Now, almost three years later, a release date has still not been identified.

Last January, Top Dawg Entertainment president told MTV that a 2016 release date was still possible. However, given the artists' busy schedules, there's still a lot to be done in terms of producing the album.

"Everything's a possibility, but I'ma say this, too: Kendrick and Cole are in a place in their carrers and in their lives where they have to keep going. Of course they're two of the biggest rappers out, but they still have to keep grinding. There's so much work that they have to continue to do," Free revealed.

Also, considering the different creative process that each artist has, producing the album will really take time.

"It takes a long time for one of them to get in a space to create a song, so to get two of them in a space to do that, it takes a lot of time and energy. It all has to be a singular project, but it just can't happen overnight," Free added.

It seems that a collaborative album is still in the cards for Kendrick and Cole, however, its release may not happen any time soon. At the time being, it seems like the two artists have chosen to focus on their music first.

Just a few weeks ago, Kendrick released a compilation album titled "Untitled Unmastered." The album contains unreleased songs and demos that Kendrick recorded during "To Pimp a Butterfly."

Meanwhile, Cole was just announced as a headline act for Lollapalooza. The music festival will take place from July 28 to 31. Cole is expected to perform during the 28th.

Hopefully, both artists will be able to carve out some time in the near future to work on their highlyanticipated collaborative album.
