'Kingdom Hearts 3' news: anticipation builds with new game footage and updates; still no release date from Square Enix

Fans of the "Kingdom Hearts" franchise will have to be content with knowing that "Kingdom Hearts III" is indeed coming because three years after its initial game announcement, Square Enix still hasn't revealed the upcoming RPG's release date.

Part of the game's delay was because game developers decided to switch engines in the middle of development. According to game director Tetsuya Nomura, "The transition was quite a process. We pretty much had to start from the ground again. We had to make sure we could recreate our key effects in the Unreal Engine and that the effects we specifically needed for 'Kingdom Hearts' could be adapted."

Fortunately for long-suffering fans, new game footage and updates were recently released. During the Jump Festa event in Japan last December, Square Enix revealed a new trailer that features scenes for both "Kingdom Hearts II.8" and "Kingdom Hearts III."

In the new game footage, game protagonist Sora is accompanied by Donald Duck and Goofy and the three characters make their way through different locations from Disney's "Tangled." The trailer also shows Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy fighting off different types of adversaries, including Nobodies.

During Christmas Day, Square Enix also published a Q&A blog post featuring fan questions answered by Nomura.

Based on previously released "Kingdom Hearts III" footage, it seems that Square Enix decided to showcase the conversation between Young Xehanort and Eraqus as its opening scene. Nomura explained that the specific scene was versatile and could be used to build up anticipation for the upcoming game. It also allowed game developers to spend more time developing new worlds.

Nomura also revealed that scenes previously released will not be the final product, so players should expect to see some more changes in the future.

When asked about the return on the Nobodies and their role in the upcoming "Kingdom Hearts III," Nomura explained that players will be able to deduce what world they are in by the enemies that they encounter in these specific worlds. "I am thinking of the enemy types as a part of the total production this time," he added.

Nomura also revealed that upcoming promotional materials will showcase the new design for the Nobodies.

The blog post also thanked its loyal fans for their continued love and support for "Kingdom Hearts."

"Kingdom Hearts III" will be available to play for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows PC. Unfortunately, no official release date has been revealed.
