'Law & Order: SVU' season 18 premiere spoilers: Fin becomes second-in-command after Benson

Lt. Benson (Mariska Hargitay) has a new right-hand man in the upcoming season of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
As per Entertainment Weekly, Fin (Ice-T) will be promoted to be the team's second-in-command, but he is not so happy about it.
Showrunner Rick Eid said in the interview that Benson would not have a better number 2 guy than Fin. The two have always enjoyed a good working relationship. Eid said their dynamics would not change much with the promotion as the two would still be out in the field as detectives while trying to manage desk work back in the precinct.
"It's more about she's in charge, but she's still in the field and acting as a detective. We refer to her internally here as a player/coach. She's the boss, she's responsible, but she is not behind a desk all day. Fin is her No. 2 and they've got a long history together and that implicit trust between each other. Fin is Fin, I don't think you'll see a drastic change in the way he operates, I think he handles it with grace. You won't see a huge shift there in the way that Fin does business frankly," Eid shared.
Having Fin as her second in command must feel good to Benson. After all, she does not have to worry about being stabbed in the back. Fin is a good friend and he understands their job. She needs his support, especially now that Chief Dodds (Peter Gallagher) is blaming her for the death of his son, Mike (Andy Karl). The young detective was killed last installment and his father still cannot accept that he is gone. Fans can expect that there is going to be a lot of tension between Dodds and Benson.
Meanwhile, the official synopsis for the premiere reveals that the SVU will be handling a very sensitive case. New York City is about to witness "a planned mass casualty event." The squad must race against time to prevent it from happening. Later on, Benson will find an adversary on ADA Barba (Raúl Esparza) as they both tackle the same case.
"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" season 18 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
