HBO continues to develop its programming with high quality shows as it renews the fairly new 'The Leftovers' for a second season.

The show, which has a plot that tells the story about the survivors of a world "rapture," revolves around the fictional town of Maple Town, New York.

The series' rapture mysteriously vanished 2% of the entire world's population, and the stories behind the characters make the show one of the most well-received shows this year.

Though not as popular as 'True Detective' or 'Game of Thrones,' The Leftovers attracted a hefty 1.8 million viewers on its pilot episode, and has been performing well consistently in terms of ratings.

The show stars Justin Theroux as Kevin Garvey Jr., father with two children who is also the chief of police in Maple Town.

Theroux acts as the main protagonist of the show who is deeply trying to make sense and understand the happenings in the new world post-rapture.

Stars Liv Tyler, Amy Brenneman and Christopher Eccleston also stars in The Leftovers as leading characters.

The series is based on Tom Perrota's book with the same title, with the author having written the pilot episode alongside Damon Lindelof.

Peter Berg, who's known for directing 'The Kingdom,' as well as 'Friday Night Lights' (movie), is the executive producer of the show. Berg also developed the television adaptation of Friday Night Lights.

The Leftovers premiered on HBO on June 29, while the announcement for the season renewal was announced on August 13.
