'Longmire' season 5 news: star says upcoming season's extended episodes allow for more focus on the show's other characters

(Official "Longmire" Facebook)Netflix renewed "Longmire" for season 5

"Longmire" and his posse are all set to ride for a fifth season with longer episodes and more focus on the show's other characters.

Netflix announced that it has picked up the series for a fifth season last October, a move that was heartily welcomed by the show's avid fans, who also go by the moniker "Longmire Posse." The posse had previously organized a Stampede that aimed to show the streaming network the not-so insignificant numbers the show will bring to Netflx.

The support that "Longmire" fans have shown and the dedication of the cast and crew certainly made a mark on Netflix. In a video released in the "New York Times," Cindy Holland, Netflix's Original Content Head, applauded the cast and crew of the crime drama for the passion they have shown. She even described meeting the producers of "Longmire" as one of the most moving experiences of her life.

"I've never been in a meeting where the producers not only cried themselves but reduced us to tears with their passion," she said.

Another star who welcomed the return of "Longmire" to Netflix is actor Lou Diamond Phillips. In an interview with "Variety," the actor talked about his work on "The 33," "Night Stalker" and "Longmire." Phillips, who plays Walt Longmire's (Robert Taylor) best friend, Henry Standing Bear, said Netflix is the best place for "Longmire" to be because of the extended time they're given.

The 53-year-old actor explained that with "Longmire's" previous network, A&E, the show was limited to just 42 minutes. This resulted in a lot of his work being edited out. But now that they have an extra 20 minutes to work with, the show can also put more focus on characters.

"Longmire" is based on Craig Johnson's "Walt Longmire Mysteries." Like the novels, the show revolves around Walt Longmire, a county sheriff who investigates crimes in his jurisdiction.

Season four ended on a cliffhanger, with Walt and his new love (Ally Walker) threatened by Walker (Callum Keith Rennie). Fans would have to wait a while before they can find out how this situation will be resolved.
