Los Angeles Clippers rumors: Clips still actively pursuing Smith

(Thomas Shea / Reuters)Blake Griffin (32) of the Los Angeles Clippers tries to take a shot against the Terrence Jones and Corey Brewer of the Houston Rockets.

With the whole DeAndre Jordan fiasco done and they have their starting center back in the team, the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to move forward and are now searching for more pieces to add to their depth.

Jordan was linked heavily to a move to the Dallas Mavericks but spurned the Texas team to stay at Staples Center, and now the core of Jordan, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul are intact — and the Clippers are again looking like contenders.

They have added players like Lance Stephenson and Paul Pierce, but are trying to add to their bench to add to their strength and who could help them when their stars are taking their scheduled breaks.

They already signed former New York Knicks big man Cole Aldrich who will be tasked as a back-up to Jordan and Griffin.

Aldrich is a great player who is impressive on both ends of the floor given the limited time he has been playing. He reacts well on the offensive end and will assumingly do a good job while playing defense to cover Jordan after the departure of Spencer Hawes.

However, it does not look like the Clippers are stopping there, as reports have revealed that they are still trying to pursue Houston Rockets forward Josh Smith.

Smith has long been linked with the Clippers since the summer began and with the team only having limited budget but a strong chance at a championship run, the scenario seems to be welcoming for Smith.

Aside from Smith, Chris Copeland and Darrell Arthur are also big men linked to the team but neither of the two can offer what Smith can.

He is an excellent two-way player who can stretch the defense with his range. Add his athletic ability and movement, he can be an excellent back-up power forward to Griffin and sometimes a center when Jordan is out.

The Clippers understand that there are eyes looking at them and their movement will be closely scrutinized by the public. All they can do is keep building the pieces they have and hope that it works to their advantage.
