Los Angeles Lakers news: Clarkson fighting for his spot

(REUTERS/Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY)Feb 22, 2015; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Boston Celtics center Brandon Bass (30) defends a pass by Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson (6) during the first half of the game at Staples Center.

With new names and faces arriving in Los Angeles as a part of the Lakers' rebuilding team, will last year's breakout player Jordan Clarkson's growth be stunted?

The previous season was a forgettable one for the Lakers and their fans. They finished the regular season with a 21-61 record to finish with the fourth lowest record behind the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Kobe Bryant was out for most of the campaign after suffering a season-ending injury which left the Lakers looking for a definitive leader.

However, one player started to stand out for the team — it was rookie Jordan Clarkson.

Picked 46th overall by the Washington Wizards, Clarkson was traded to the Lakers and started his career in the D-League.

With Jeremy Lin clearly struggling and the Lakers missing players, he was recalled and is now trying to establish his name as the top guard for Los Angeles.

In his young NBA career, Clarkson finished the season playing 59 games and starting 38 of them — finishing with an average of 11.9 points, 3.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds while playing around 25 minutes per contest.

He was exciting yet still raw, and his demeanor showed that he was not going to be deterred by everything going on.

However, with the arrival of players like Brandon Bass, Lou Williams, Roy Hibbert, Larry Nance Jr. and D'Angelo Russell, it seems the spotlight might be averted from Clarkson in the coming season.

Furthermore, Bryant and Julius Randle are returning from injuries and will surely have their slots in the starting line-up.

Now it seems that Clarkson might be the odd-man out in the picture.

But instead of caving in, Clarkson displays his determined nature and is ready to fight for his place as he takes part in the NBA Summer League.

In the Las Vegas league, Clarkson has shown that he has elevated his game, playing three games so far and putting up very nice numbers.

Against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where the spotlight was on top rookie prospects Karl Anthony-Towns and Russell, Clarkson led the team with 23 points while shooting 8-of-17 from the field in the defeat.

In the second game, Clarkson had 19 points in the loss against the 76ers, but he also had four rebounds and shot 50% from the field.

But in their latest game against the Knicks, Clarkson struggled but finished with 13 points and committed just one turnover.

If anything, the sophomore player is showing that he has more to offer, and that he is not ready to give up his spot in the team.
