'Marco Polo' season 3 renewal rumors, news: Netflix drops series due to high production costs?

(Credit: NETFLIX / Official Facebook Page)"Marco Polo" season 3's fate remains unknown as Netflix is said to be considering production costs for the historical drama

Netflix might be in a tight spot these days as the third season for "Marco Polo" has not been announced yet and rumors are hot on the alleged budget issues that the streaming giant has yet to address.

The historical drama's second season received mix reactions from both fans and experts. The drop in ratings seemed to imply that some viewers didn't like how the stories were told.

However, the biggest rumor involved with the show these days points to a possible issue behind the scenes. According to The Christian Times, the budget needed for a third run may be in the center of the table. Netflix picked up "Marco Polo" from the hands of Starz and dished a staggering $90 million to produce ten episodes for the first installment.

Though the streaming service has the money, there are other shows in the line-up and the said amount could actually produce more than one series. Since "Marco Polo" requires costly costumes and settings to begin with, Netflix should have a bigger and logical reason to keep the show going.

With a drop in ratings, the historical series may not push through. On the other hand, there are still questions that need to be answered and Netflix may consider giving production another shot.

One of the questions that needs to be addressed is Prester John's entry. In the finale of season two, it appeared as if his men attacked Kublai Khan's (Benedict Wong) camp. If he was behind the attack, it is only reasonable that the two powers butt heads in season three.

Adding to that is the alleged death of the Mongol leader in the upcoming episodes. According to Parent Herald, there are speculations suggesting that Kublai Khan will die in the hands of the mysterious warrior, Prester John.

Earlier reports also suggest that Wong may have been the reason behind the show's cancellation. Wong is reportedly leaving the series, and without an actor like him who could successfully pull off Kublai Khan's characteristics, it might be difficult to produce ten more episodes.

"Marco Polo" season three has yet to be announced by Netflix.
