'Masters of Sex' season three updates: Josh Charles unveiled; cast returns for five-year time jump

Showtime's period drama "Masters of Sex" is geared up for a season three return in a few weeks and fans are looking forward to more updates on what to expect. Among new updates that fans can soak up on are cast renewals, as well as Josh Charles' character's first look.
"Masters of Sex," which premiered in 2013, is based on a biography written by Thomas Maier titled "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How to Love." It revolves around the story of human sexuality researchers Dr. Bill Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan).
Season three will return with a five-year jump from where the show left off in season two, which will see Bill and Virginia getting ready to launch their 1965 book, "Human Sexual Response." They are also set to meet new people along the way, including perfume salesman Dan Logan (Charles of "The Good Wife"), who is looking at literally bottling the smell of sex.
Charles, whose first few scenes in the show have been released to the media, will "unwittingly [become] the catalyst for massive changes and upheavals," Caplan tells USA Today. Show creator Michelle Ashford promises that the addition of Charles' character will complicate the couple's life -- in a good way. Because of this and the fact that Bill and Johnson are starting to become some sort of celebrity, season three will be a whole lot lighter than the previous season.
Also appearing in season three is Sarah Silverman, reprising her role as Betty's (Annaleigh Ashford) girlfriend, Helen. In the new season, the lesbian couple tries to have a baby, a feat that is almost impossible for the period. Also joining the cast is Tate Donovan ("24: Live Another Day") as a scientist who will be involved with Margaret Sculley (Allison Janney). Josh Charles will make his appearance on July 26 and will be a recurring character for ten episodes.
"Masters of Sex" season three premieres on July 12, 10pm.
