It's been eight years since we last saw Jason Bourne. Granted, 2012's "The Bourne Legacy" paid homage to its namesake in its own way but that didn't stop fans from wondering what became of the extremely relatable spy.

Luckily, fans will soon find out as production on the fifth installation of the Bourne series is ongoing. Hollywood favorite Matt Damon has even shared some hints at what fans can expect from the fifth movie.

The 44-year-old Damon recently embarked on a press junket to promote his latest movie, "The Martian," and he talked a little bit about the still untitled "Bourne 5." According to the actor, Bourne (or David Webb) has his memory back. But despite that, there are still things he doesn't know and questions he needs answers to.

"It's 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid," Damon explained. "So we have to answer the questions, where's he been? What's he doing? What gets him going again?"

Once they were able to come up with answers to those questions, they were confident they can proceed with the next movie. It also helped that director Paul Greengrass is back in the director's chair. Damon famously said several years ago that he would only come back to film another "Bourne" movie if Greengrass was also onboard.

There's no official synopsis or plot description for the movie yet but it has been said that the film will touch on a "post-Snowden" world. Snowden, the infamous government contractor who leaked classified information, will be alluded to in the movie.

Even though Damon was wary about revealing too much, he did hint that "Bourne 5" might be about Jason in a changed Europe, a world where there are all kinds of discussions about "spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."

Aside from Damon and Greengrass, another familiar face is returning; Julia Stiles is reportedly back as Nicky Parsons. Veteran actor, Tommy Lee Jones, has been cast as a high-ranking CIA official. Alicia Vikander, Ato Essandoh and Vincent Cassel are also onboard, with the latter said to be the movie's new antagonist.

No official release date has been set for the untitled "Bourne 5" but it's expected to hit theaters by July 2016.
