Microsoft's convertible laptop, the Surface Pro, has released its fourth iteration last year. Although there are talks that the tech giant is eyeing on releasing Surface Pro 5 this year, new reports revealed that it will most likely be launched next year.

Since the release of the first Surface device in 2013, Microsoft has been releasing newer versions of the 2-in-1 detachable device yearly. According to previous reports, Surface Pro 5 is supposed to be unveiled in May and be ready for purchase in June this year. However, it's already July and there is still no word from Microsoft about the release of the upcoming device.

Since it is still the middle of 2016, there are speculations that it might be formally introduced to the public by October. However, it is highly likely to be launched in spring 2017. The delay apparently is for Surface Pro 5 to come out along with Microsoft's major update for Windows 10, called Redstone or RS2. Microsoft is reportedly planning to feature the newest update on the Surface Pro 5.

As for its specs, CNet speculates that the upcoming device will be running on the upcoming Kaby Lake processor, Pro 4's Intel Skylake's successor. The tech giant is also eyeing to have a fast-charging capability for Surface Pro 5 so they might add a USB Type-C port.

Rumor has it that the fifth iteration of the convertible laptop will have a jaw-dropping 2K and 4K screen versions. The RAM might also be boosted up to 16 GB. The Surface Pen that comes with the device may also get an upgrade. The current Surface Pen is powered by alkaline AAAA battery. Microsoft may design a wirelessly rechargeable pen on the upcoming device to give users more convenience.

Meanwhile, The Verge recently reported that Microsoft offers $300 discount to students when they buy both the Surface Pro 4 and Xbox One. The promo runs until Aug. 14.
