'Miitomo' release date news: Social messaging app to arrive in the US by end of March; app successfully launches in Japan

Nintendo's first smartphone app "Miitomo" has already accrued 1 million users just a week after it was released in Japan. The social messaging app is expected to launch in the United States by the end of this month.

In "Miitomo," users are tasked to create and customize their own Mii avatars. Users are also asked some questions that will help start conversation with other friends or users.

While the landscape of social media apps is currently dominated by the likes of Facebook and Twitter, Nintendo has been optimistic about the app's appeal to the younger generation.

Unlike other social media apps, "Miitomo" focuses on developing smaller but more intimate interactions.

"It's more personal, more one-on-one," Reggie Fils-Aimé, president of Nintendo's U.S. Division, told The Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced its plans to release content that extends beyond the video game market. "Miitomo" is one of the company's first releases under this new marketing plan.

"It's not a game in the traditional sense that you've seen from Nintendo in the past, but those who have used it have commented that it can turn communication between friends into a form of play," Fils-Aimé told Time.

Following "Miitomo," four more apps are expected to be released before the end of March 2017. Judging by the initial response to "Miitomo," it seems that Nintendo will have a successful foray into the smartphone app market.

According to Nintendo, "Miitomo" will be released in the United States by the end of this month; however, no specific release date has been announced. Those looking to gain early access can install the social messaging app manually. The process has been detailed by Nintendo Life. Unfortunately, any progress made on this version of the game will not be carried out when "Miitomo" officially launches in the user's region.

"Miitomo" will be available for both iOS and Android devices. Be sure to check back for the latest updates.
