'NCIS: LA' season 7 spoilers: next season shows more of Reznikov's backstory; Nell-Eric romance takes a backseat

The drop in ratings for the sixth season of "NCIS LA" had fans very worried that the show would soon be cancelled. Thankfully, "NCIS LA" was renewed in May and its avid viewers are already speculating about what the upcoming season will feature.

"NCIS LA", which first aired in 2009, is a first spin-off of the highly successful "NCIS". The series follows G. Callen, played by Chris O' Donnell, a special agent under the Office of Special Projects (OSP). He and his team are part of the elite division of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and are highly trained in undercover assignments.

The show initially garnered good ratings, ranking only second to the original "NCIS", but later received average to positive reviews, with reports deeming the show as good, but nothing extraordinary.

The sixth season perfectly primed the upcoming series in terms of plotline. Among the highly anticipated developments in season 7 is the characterization of G. Callen's father, Nikita Alexander Reznikov, who was unveiled at the end of season 6. Presently, fans are only aware that his father is a KGB agent who is alive and it would be up to the seventh season to provide Reznikov's long-awaited history.

Another plotline that could possibly be explored is the budding romance between two "NCIS LA" pairings: Kensi and Deeks, and Nell and Eric. But it seems that the Nell-Eric romance could take a back seat, as season 7 will focus on Kensi/Deeks. In an interview by Connected Digital World, Renee Felice Smith, the actress who plays Nell was quoted as saying:

"With Kensi and Deeks, it's kind of tough to have two couples that are actually together at the same time and to show all of that. We've kind of taken a break from the Eric and Nell story while Kensi and Deeks are kind of in the heat of their relationship."

No specific date has been announced for the premiere of "NCIS LA" season 7. However, the show will be returning on CBS by fall this year.
