'NCIS' season 14 spoilers: Leroy Jethro Gibbs' new hire has something to prove

(Facebook/NCIS)Wilmer Valderrama is a series regular in "NCIS" season 14.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) will replace Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) with a charismatic and experienced agent in the upcoming season of "NCIS."

According to TV Line, the long-running CBS series has tapped Wilmer Valderrama to play a returning NCIS agent who will be joining the squad for the new installment. The actor will become one of the series regulars as a replacement for Weatherly, who decided to quit the show after thirteen seasons. Valderrama just finished guest starring in ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" where he played an injured guitarist for five episodes. As a charming patient, he had become a favorite of the female doctors and they were all sorry to see him go.

Valderrama's undeniable appeal especially to women viewers is expected to be used in full force in his portrayal of the enigmatic NCIS agent. According to its description, his character is a "once grounded NCIS field agent who accepted a deep cover assignment years ago and never resurfaced." In fact, most people in the NCIS are not aware of his whereabouts. Some even think he is already dead. His return is expected to raise quite a number of eyebrows, especially when Gibbs decides to hire him back. "An unpredictable, charismatic loose cannon," the agent is determined to serve his country once again.

Executive producer Gary Glasberg said the role is perfect for the actor.

"Fans are going to see him like they've never seen him before. This is going to be fun. We're thrilled he's coming aboard," Glasberg said in a statement, according to TV Line.

Previously, it was announced that Duane Henry, who plays MI6 agent Clayton Reeves, and Sarah Clarke, who plays FBI agent Tess Monroe, would reprise their roles in the series. Weatherly's exit has left a huge hole in the NCIS squad. For weeks, fans have been wondering if the showrunners would add a new member to fill in for DiNozzo. Rumors claim that both Reeves and Monroe will be asked to join the team.

CBS has recently released its lineup this fall. "NCIS" season 14 will premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m EST.
