Despite a disastrous period with the New York Jets last year, quarterback Geno Smith is showing some signs of promise ahead of the new NFL season.

The Jets' starting quarterback was recently seen playing excellent football in New York's Wednesday scrimmage.

He successfully bounced back after the previous practice where he was criticized for throwing three interceptions in a game. But Smith bounced back perfectly this time with pin-point passing and ended the game without a single turnover.

Speaking to the media after practice, Jets' head coach Todd Bowles praised his quarterbacks, saying "The quarterbacks were decent, they just have to be consistent."

One of Smith's highlights during the practice was a completed pass to receiver Walter Powell for 70 yards. Smith was also the most utilized quarterback during the entire practice day.

All eyes have been on Smith as much pressure has to be placed on the quarterback to lift the team, though he has fallen short. Despite underachieving, Smith has been given another chance to prove himself worthy of carrying the team when needed.

Last year, Smith did little to help the Jets during the 2014 season as his performance, along with the other players, only led New York to a miserable 4-12 season, enough for a fourth place in the AFC East.

As a result of their shortcomings, Rex Ryan was replaced by Bowles, but Smith is still seen as their top quarterback and has a lot to prove.

Smith played 14 games with the Jets last year, starting 13 of those games. He had a 59.7% pass completion rate, but allowed 13 interceptions throughout the campaign.

He was also ineffective in rushing as he only averaged around 4.0 a game after attempting to rush 59 times and getting 238 yards off it.

Finally, Smith recorded eight fumbles and lost three of them, which he badly needs to improve before the start of the new season.
