Japanese video game company Nintendo's "next home console" is set to become its most ambitious platform to date that will even rival game behemoths Microsoft and Sony.

Rumors have indicated that upcoming portable/home console hybrid will be equipped with Nvidia's Tegra X1. The processor that is used in the mobile Nvidia Shield was initially projected to result unfavorably as it would not render its support to GameCube and Wii games efficiently.

Essentially, this would mean that any games that are played through backward compatibility, which has been a staple on Nintendo systems, would require to be emulated. This is akin to the situation Microsoft had embroiled itself in when it launched the backward compatibility on its Xbox One.

All of these have been debunked by Digital Foundry, a firm that specializes in game technology and hardware review. Accordingly, the NX console will be able to render older console's games with some technical concessions. To prove this, the firm has utilized a Nvidia Shield that was running the GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin.

Moreover, the results have indicated that GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine has held at 30 frames per second, which is considered fair by today's standards. In the game's native resolution and an upscaled 1080p, the game was also able to produce drops of between one and ten frames on the Nvidia Shield. Meanwhile, the game Mario Kart: Double Dash was not able to manage triumphantly based on the recent standards. It dropped from 60 frames per second to only 30 when it was upscaled to 1080p.

For the time being, there is no indication as to which games would the partnership support on the upcoming console. Nevertheless, if indicators are to be followed, it is highly likely that Nintendo and Nvidia will coalesce and truly prosper. And with the reliable Android TV platform supporting, all three might just make the next console experience all the more powerful.
