Nintendo NX release date: Next-gen console's production delayed to early 2017; to have VR support?

Many are expecting to score Nintendo's newest gaming console when it launches in March 2017. However, the latest reports suggest that majority of consumers will have to wait a bit longer. Nintendo has reportedly delayed mass production of the upcoming NX console, in order to add more functions.

According to Digitimes, the Nintendo NX was originally intended to enter mass production by mid-2016. However, a source from the upstream supply chain has revealed that plans have been pushed back to early 2017. The reason for the delay would be to incorporate virtual reality (VR) functionality that will help the next-generation console compete in the already fierce market.

Based on the new plans from Nintendo, production of a few key components will start at the end of 2016. Apart from the delay in mass production, Nintendo has also significantly reduced its order volume. Their initial order was 20 million units for the first year, but now, it has been reduced to 9.5–10 million units.

It seems that with the release of the NX, Nintendo has decided to proceed with caution. The company's hesitance could be attributed to the disappointing sales of the Wii U console. The Wii U did not have the kind of response that the company was hoping for.

Just recently, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that they had learned from their mistakes with the Wii U. Rest assured, they would not be making the same mistakes with the Nintendo NX. In light of this, it seems understandable that Nintendo has scaled back and delayed mass production of the upcoming console.

Thankfully, the response toward the Nintendo NX has been mostly positive. Many consumers are anticipating its release, especially since the NX is rumored to come with a hybrid gaming experience — a traditional gaming console coupled with mobile functionality. Now that it will supposedly come with VR support, then there is definitely reason to anticipate its arrival.

Hopefully, the NX launches soon before anticipation from fickle customers die down, or at least before the rumored Xbox Two and PlayStation 4.5 NEO launches.
