NVIDIA Pascal GPU release date rumors: Upcoming GPUs to launch in April?

(Reuters)

NVIDIA is rumored to be launching its newest graphics processor NVIDIA Pascal GeForce GTX 1080 during the GPU Technology Conference 2016 to be held on April 4-7. Meanwhile, its release for public consumption is said to happen the following month at the Computex Taipei, a computer expo that will be held in Taiwan on May 31 to June 4.

Since NVIDIA CEO and co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang will be giving the opening keynote presentation on April 5, tech enthusiasts are speculating that he may finally be unveiling the new processor during his talk.

In terms of what this new GPU entails, many are anticipating its more powerful capabilities than what had been seen in its predecessors. Since it is going to cater slim mobile devices and VR headsets, it is reported that it will come in much smaller form but will feature the most powerful GP104 configuration with all of the its resources unlocked.

According to WCCFTech, the GTX 1080 will be the fastest consumer offering. The GTX 1070, which is also expected to be released at the same time as the GTX 1080, will be using a cut-down configuration. These GP104-based graphics cards will have up to 8 GB GDDR5 memory. Moreover, the tech website claims that the GTX 1080 may start shipping on May 27, while custom models will hit stores by June.

Meanwhile, the cut-down GP100-based GPU GTX 1080 Ti is allegedly packed with a total of 10.496 teraflops. The more powerful GP100-based graphic card is the GTX Titan, which is reported to have a total of 12.595 teraflops.

WCCCFTech also clarified that the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti names are not the official names of NVIDIA's upcoming graphics cards, and the company may have entirely new names for them at their debut.

NVIDIA, though, has not released any comments regarding these rumors. Fans are advised to take them with a little doubt and wait for the official statement from the company. Stay tuned for updates.
