Former One Direction member and now solo artist Zayn Malik revealed in a recent interview that since leaving the band in March of 2015, he has only spoken to one of his former bandmates, Liam Payne.

Malik graces the cover of NME Magazine's latest issue, and there, he shared his conversation with Payne, saying, "I'm still probably the closest to Liam."

The 23-year-old continued, "We talk on the phone. He congratulated me on my single, which was nice. I congratulated him on his Brit Award. It was a good chat. We haven't met up in a long time so we want to meet up."

Malik congratulating Payne for the Brit Award was a great gesture, however, it may have proven that the former 1D member is still not in good terms with the band's other members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson. One Direction won the award as a group for the song "Drag Me Down."

It's been a year since Malik left One Direction and decided to pursue a career as a solo R&B artist, but this is not the first time that he shared details about his former group. Also being on the cover of Complex Magazine's  April-May issue, he spoke about the main reason which led to his departure from the band that helped him establish his name in the music industry.

According to the Pillow Talk singer, the major factor that made him decide to have a different path was because he felt he had no opportunity to be himself while with One Direction. Simple things like growing a beard, which he has now, and dyeing his hair were not allowed.

Malik also spoke about authenticity, which he is experiencing now as a solo performer, having the chance to express himself, also saying there is no longer a "creative tension."
