'Orphan Black' season 5 release date, spoilers: Final season to explore life extension; how will it end for the clones?

(Facebook/orphanblacktv)The final season of "Orphan Black" will premiere in 2017.

Fans already know that the upcoming season of "Orphan Black" will be its last. And while it is certainly sad to think about saying goodbye to the slew of interesting characters, it is also exciting to consider that the final season will be exploring a different scientific development.

While at the red carpet event for the recently concluded 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, co-showrunner Graeme Manson spoke to TVLine about the fifth season of the BBC America series.

"We try and explore a new branch of contemporary science every year and this year... we're looking at prolongevity and life extension, which is a very interesting and topical science right now," said Manson.

The previous season revealed that Neolution founder P.T. Westmooreland is actually 170 years old. This season will delve into the science behind that and explore the different possibilities.

The prospect of being introduced to new clones is also something that has got fans excited. However, when asked about the addition of new clones, Manson was rather tight-lipped. "That's a touchy question," he said. However, Jordan Gavaris, who plays Felix "Fee" Dawkins, pointed out that there may be clones that have not been discovered yet, so they're not really all that new.

On the other hand, star Tatiana Maslany also kept mum on the possibility of new clones. Maslany portrays a number of different clones and has been praised for her wide range —winning the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. When asked by TVLine on new clones, Maslany only said, "I don't know."

Since this is the final season of the show, fans are now wondering how the series will tie up the storylines of the different clones. However, it's not going to be a happy ending for all of them.

While speaking to TVGuide at the red carpet, Maslany teased that they will all have a variety of endings. "Some of them might not be happy, and some of them might be ... a little tragic," revealed the award-winning actress.

"Orphan Black" season 5 will premiere in 2017.
