'Outlander' season 3 updates: Showrunner hints at challenges for season 3; Droughtlander to be shorter this year

(Facebook/OutlanderTVSeries.starz)Production for season 3 will reportedly begin in late summer or early fall.

"Outlander" season 2 has literally just ended, but fans are already desperate for the show's third season. Luckily, Droughtlander will reportedly be shorter this time.

"Outlander" recently ended its magnificent second season run with a finale full of shocking twists and turns and heartbreaking, poignant moments. The episode, "Dragonfly in Amber," saw Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) inadvertently murdering an enraged Dougal (Graham McTavish) and saying their goodbyes at Craigh na Dun. More importantly, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) finally discovered who her real father is, while Claire found out that Jamie is still alive.

Like Claire, fans are no doubt chomping at the bit and excited to go back in time to look for Jamie. Luckily, they might do that sooner than they think as season 3 of "Outlander" will reportedly arrive earlier than usual.

Producer Matt Roberts previous told The Hollywood Reporter that everyone involved in the show have not taken a break. Thanks to Starz' early pick-up of seasons 3 and 4, the writers' room have been hard at work crafting the scripts for next season, while the rest of the crew have been continuously prepping.

"'Outlander' is a beast of a show to produce, so if we took a normal break, a regular hiatus like a normal show, we would already be behind," Roberts exlained. "Now the fans can have it sooner than what they think. The Droughtlander won't be as long as they expect."

Season 3 will be following the events of "Voyager," the third novel in Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" books. Aside from reuniting Jamie and Claire, the show will find the couple back on the high seas, something that showrunner Ronald Moore is excited about. The executive producer said that he plans to adapt the sea chase and is confident that today's CGI technology means they can deliver high-quality sea sequences.

However, the showrunner did admit to Deadline that with Jamie and Claire ending up in Jamaica, the challenge now would be to find a location that can approximate the country, especially since their production base is still Scotland.

The series will also still primarily revolve around Jamie and Claire. According to Moore, while Brianna had a major role in the finale, Claire and Jamie's daughter won't be seen so much in season 3, nor would her adopted father, Frank (Tobias Menzies).

There's no word yet on when "Outlander" season 3 will return to TV screens, but production will reportedly start late summer or early fall.
