"Pacific Rim 2" is set to debut more than a year from now, but already, details about the upcoming sequel have already made its way online. While leaks about the actual plot of the film have been scarce, the cast and the crew of the upcoming feature have spilled information about what fans can expect from the film. And by the looks of it, the second movie would have a little bit more depth than the first.

"Pacific Rim," which premiered two years ago in 2013, is a science fiction, action film directed by Guillermo del Toro famous for the "Hell Boy" franchise. It tells the story of the battle between human beings, who are equipped with super robots called Jaegers, against Kaijus, colossal monsters who have emerged from a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

While the film has since become a commercial success, most critics have panned the movie's attempt at drama with some reviews claiming that the plot was sacrificed in order to give way to the CGI effects.

Charlie Hunnam, who plays the protagonist, Raleigh Becket, has since recognized the shortcoming of the first movie, claiming in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that while they tried to make it work, ultimately the effects won out.

"Although we tried very hard on Pacific Rim to marry those two elements, I do feel like ultimately it got weighed heavier on the side of spectacle than storytelling."

However, the actor is hopeful that the plot of the second outing for the franchise would solve the plot problems the original flick had. He said, "I hope that we are able to remedy that a little bit going into the second."

The production for "Pacific Rim 2" is scheduled to begin this November and the film is expected to premiere on Aug. 4, 2017.
