'PayDay 3' release date: game announced as Starbreeze regains rights

(Facebook/OVERKILLSoftware)Overkill announces 100th update for "PayDay" franchise

"PayDay" fans will be delighted to know that micro transactions will be removed from "PayDay 2," which means the black market part of the game will be free for everyone to use. Additionally, Starbreeze, the parent company of Overkill Software, has also announced that it has acquired back the rights to the "PayDay" franchise. But perhaps the most exciting news of them all is the revelation that a third installment is currently in the works.

When micro transactions were incorporated into "PayDay 2," fans were outraged and the amount of backlash against Overkill built up. The integration of micro transactions also felt somewhat like a betrayal for fans since the studio previously swore never to do such a thing. Thankfully, along with Starbreeze's announcement of regaining the rights to the franchise, micro transactions on "PayDay 2" will also be a thing of the past.

Additionally, the studio has revealed that more content will be coming, along with patches, to "PayDay." The extra content will reportedly arrive over the next 18 months.

Overkill entered a partnership with 505 Games, which gave rise to the studio being able to re-obtain the ownership of the franchise. Starbreeze will be entitled to all "PayDay 2" sales from Steam starting ex post facto May 1, 2016. However, 505 Games will still be able to issue "PayDay 2: Crimewave Edition."

As for the revenue that will come from the upcoming game "PayDay 3," Starbreeze will share the earnings with 505 Games, which will be capped at USD $40 million.

"'PayDay' is very close to my heart, and has laid the foundation for Starbreeze success in recent years," said Bo Andersson, CEO of Starbreeze, in a statement. "We're very excited to bring our heisters home to the safe house."

As for its release date, "PayDay 3" has yet to be given an official one, so it is best that fans wait for a formal announcement from Overkill Software and Starbreeze.
