'Penny Dreadful' season 2 spoilers: Dorian hosts a lavish ball for Angelique, tragic news for Sir Malcolm

"Penny Dreadful" is, arguably, the most macabre, horror-filled and spine-chilling show on television. Showtime's nail-biting series has garnered gradual support with Vanessa's complex character portrayal, Ethan's beast and Evelyn's twisted mind.

In episode six titled "Glorious Horrors", Dorian hosts a lavish ball in Angelique's honor, reports TVGuide. Last week, fans saw that Dorian may have found the perfect match in Angelique. The ominous title hints that the ball may be glorious indeed, but beneath the mask of beauty and charm, things are certain to take a turn for the worse. After all, things are rarely simple in "Penny Dreadful". The promotional clip depicts Dorian inviting the rest of the troupe for a lavish ball.

The clip also shows Vanessa telling (or warning) Evelyn that she has had quite an effect on Sir Malcolm. While the plotline of Malcolm and Evelyn is under development, the relationship between them is the least favorite among fans of the supernatural British-American horror show.

Vanessa and Ethan give Sir Malcom some tragic news, while Lavinia Putney is disturbed by an encounter with the Creature. Moreover, Roper hunts down Ethan and is sure to cause trouble, as can be seen in the episode's preview clip. The episode's description ends with a teaser that promises a glorious night for Vanessa will turn into a night of horrors.

Indiewire had published an article that details the changing role of women in television. While the crop of male anti-heroes has been popular and includes the likes of Walter White, Dexter Morgan, Rick Grimes and Damon Salvatore, female leads on shows have been restricted to playing certain stereotypes.

The protagonist of "Penny Dreadful", Vanessa Ives, does terrible things and often uses bloody rituals and demonic languages. She is a typical anti-heroine yet, viewers have taken a shine to her. Mary Sibley from "Salem" has a similar character to Vanessa Ives.

It is truly the age of anti-heroines who are no longer playing victims. "Penny Dreadful" airs on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime.
