'Person of Interest' season 5 spoilers: Michael Emerson hints demise of some characters; new season will span 13 episodes

"Person of Interest" ended season 4 with casualties and new alliances. In the upcoming fifth season, how will The Machine survive against Samaritan?

After being presumed dead, Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) had apparently survived the war as evidenced by a shot of her walking away with Samaritan's agents — willingly, it seems. But changes in season 5 of "Person of Interest" do not end there. Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) becomes more obsessed than ever with Samaritan. This, as fans may already know, is not going to bode well for him and those around him.

"In a way, it's more dangerous than we can even portray on television, because the idea of what Samaritan is and how plausible it is, is hair-raising," Emerson told Indiewire. "I try to hold onto that idea that what they're up against is the end of humankind potentially. Those are high stakes."

Because the series is returning with only 13 episodes, about half the number of episodes of a full season run, and because there have been lots of rumors of the show's cancellation, Emerson also hinted at the loss of more than one or more characters. If they stay, though, there will be a great shift in their personalities.

More about the fifth season is expected to trickle in by Sunday, Oct. 11. The show is going to have a special video presentation and a panel with stars Emerson, Shahi, Kevin Chapman (Lionel Fusco), and Amy Acker (Root) at the New York Comic Con.

Even with rumors of cancellation, fans are still trying to convince CBS to bring the crime drama back to its usual 22 episodes. A fan petition has been put up online by Kaily Russell of Sonoma, California and 7,500 signatures are needed to bring the show alive for a full season. So far, there are now approximately 6,800 supporters with 700 more needed.

Fans can watch out for more updates on "Person of Interest." The show airs Tuesdays on CBS.
