'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' release date: Johnny Depp still the star; film to be released in May

(Facebook/PiratesoftheCaribbean)Despite rumors to the contrary, Johnny Depp is still the star of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" has been plagued with numerous problems and issues for months now, almost as if Davey Jones himself had cursed the production.

There's no question that Johnny Depp almost single-handedly powered the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" into history. His charming and annoyingly lucky Capt. Jack Sparrow is the spirit behind the popular adventure franchise. So it was understandable for producers to worry when Depp's personal problems started affecting the film's production.

Fans have no doubt heard the rumors that some of the production delays were caused by Depp's tempestuous relationship with now-estranged wife, Amber Heard. This was probably what led fans to believe in the rumors that "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" would be tweaked so that the film would focus on Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) instead.

While Turner also played a big part in the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, he's no match for Capt. Jack's popularity. However, those rumors might be unfounded as reports have surfaced that "Dead Men Tell No Tales" will once again revolve around the rum-loving captain.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" will reportedly find Jack Sparrow searching for the Trident of Poseidon. The captain of the Black Pearl is said to need this mystical artifact in order to prevent Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew of ghost pirates from killing him. There's no word on what Will's, aka Davey Jones, part is in this adventure.

The fifth installation of the franchise will also be introducing a Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), who is said to be Will's son and who's on a mission to find his father. "Skins" star Kaya Scodelario is also on board as Carina Smyth, an astronomer who's helping Jack in his quest. There have been speculations that she's Captain Barbossa's (Geoffrey Rush) daughter.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" is slated to reach theaters in May 2017.
