'Prison Break' season 5 cast news: William Fichtner not returning to the series; will Sara Tancredi die?

(Facebook/PrisonBreak)William Fichtner won't be returning to "Prison Break" season 5.

"Prison Break" will be missing one familiar face when the once hugely popular show finally returns on air.

"Prison Break" season 5 is without a doubt one show that fans are eagerly waiting for. The popular series bid fans adieu in 2009 with the alleged death of main protagonist Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller).

The news that Fox has picked up the series has excited fans, especially when the show's original stars Miller, Dominic Purcell, and Sarah Wayne Callies had all signed up to reprise their roles as Scofield, Lincoln Burrows, and Dr. Sara Tancredi, respectively. The network has also managed to convince most of the "Prison Break" crew to return. To date, Robert Knepper has signed on to play T-Bag once more. Amaure Nolasco and Rockmond Dunbar are also on board as Sucre and C-Note, while Paul Adelstein will once again play Paul Kellerman.

But one character that fans will be missing is Alexander Mahone. According to reports, William Fichtner won't be returning to the "Prison Break" reboot. While no reason has been given, its been said that the 59-year-old actor's schedule has left him with no time to do the TV show. Fichtner can be seen in this summer's "Independence Day: Resurgence" and in "Shooter," a new series set to debut on July 19 on the USA Network.

While Mahone will be sorely missed, there's still a lot to look forward to in "Prison Break" season 5. There are rumors that Sara Tancredi might meet her end in season 5 and that her death will pave the way for season 6. While her fate is still up in the air, what's certain is that Scofield is really alive. In an interview with Deadline, Purcell explained that Michael ended up working with ISIS and ISA and when he couldn't do it anymore, was sent to jail in Yemen. Fans would have to watch the series to see how everything will play out.

"Prison Break" season 5 is set to return to Fox in the fall.
