'Scream Queens' season 3 renewal news: Future of series unknown, much like Chanel's fate

(Facebook/ScreamQueensFOX)"Scream Queens" has yet to be renewed for a third season.

"Scream Queens" season 2 has already concluded, and fans are wondering what the future has in store for the series. Fox has yet to announce a renewal order for the show, and, based on its ratings, things certainly look bleak.

It has been pointed out that the second season of "Scream Queens" did not get stellar ratings, with each episode declining in viewership. Its first season fared far better, which earned it the second season renewal that it deserved. With low ratings this time around, fans are worried that the show may never see a third one.

Additionally, some critics have scrutinized the second season's storytelling, especially when it comes to the murder mystery aspect. The killer — or killers — were revealed too early in the game, which didn't make it exciting to figure out who was behind the murderous mask.

However, it has been argued that the show may still get a third season because of the cliffhanger finale it left viewers with. The season 2 finale tied up a lot of loose ends and even featured an after-the-fact update on what the characters were up to.

Titled "Drain the Swamp," Nurse Hoffel (Kirstie Alley) trapped everyone at the C.U.R.E. Institute and planned to detonate a bomb to kill them all. However, Denise Hemphill (Niecy Nash), who was revealed to have survived, came in at the last minute to save them. Everyone ganged up on Nurse Hoffel, and, during the kerfuffle, both she and Cassidy (Taylor Lautner) perished. With the two of them gone, the Green Meanie was finally vanquished.

The finale ended with an epilogue that detailed what everyone did after the terrifying events. Hester (Lea Michele) and Brock (John Stamos) stole all of Dean Munsch's money, and ran away to Blood Island, where they would lovingly kill tourists together. Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), on the other hand — who, apparently, did not have Kuru — retreated to Aspen and became successful with her sex therapy business.

As for the Chanels, Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin) and Zayday (Keke Palmer) continued to run the hospital — thanks to their medical prowess. Finally, Chanel (Emma Roberts) got the fame and fortune she had always wanted, by hosting a show called "Lovin' the C," which was produced by Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd).

But it didn't stop there. As Chanel boarded her car, she saw a Kappa Kappa Tau pin on the passenger seat and was greeted by the Red Devil killer.

And much like the future of "Scream Queens," Chanel's fate was left unknown.
